A Semester in Reflection, Fight for What You Want

A Semester in Reflection, Fight for What You Want

As this semester draws to an end there are a few things I know for sure! I have made wonderful friends, found out that I have some amazing cheerleaders at home,  and I am so happy that I have Prince Charming by my side. Rather it be up or down I have my very best friend.

I also got a late enroll into a class, Social Media Marketing (SMM) 388 and had to start a blog.  I had to get a twitter, still something I don’t totally understand and don’t really like I am a Facebook girl for sure! In SMM I created Big Girl In A College World, something that has been so well received and has become something I enjoy doing. This climate was so right to start a plus-sized blog right now, I am going to thank my hero for this, Ashley Graham!

As every semester is this one has been one of growth and learning. One of the biggest struggles I have had has been managing everything. I am a full time student, in the service fraternity where I have completed almost 40 hours of community service, a mentor for college able but not college bound high schoolers, and recently Secretary of Sustainability. All of this plus getting sleep and having a social life can be overwhelming, but I pushed through and I couldn’t be more proud of myself or thankful to all the people I have had around me. I call Prince Charming my PA but without him helping me so much I couldn’t have made it. Culpepper  my froomie has been there to listen to my cry when I got woken up and bring me Starbucks in bed. My marketing professor keeps telling me that I am only as strong as my network, so as I sit here in Starbucks tired but happy I am so happy with the caring people I have surrounded myself with this year.

The thing I have been most proud of this semester was a hard won battle. As Secretary of Sustainability for the Student Government Association I was appointed late and fought at every step for all the events and changes  I wanted to bring to campus. I was called into numerous meetings, felt belittled, and felt threatened at times. None of this is something that I wish upon another. The thing that I don’t think people standing in my way bargained for is that I am a fighter. I didn’t make it where I am today by backing down from what I think is right. So right or wrong I was a bull in a china shop, I fought so hard for my events and changes. Last night I was at the SGA Banquet, I was re-sworn in for Secretary of Sustainability for this upcoming year. I was recognized in speeches and congratulated. Something that felt so so good! My Earth Day Event was a success that the school has been sharing all over social media.

I am so so proud of myself for all these accomplishments. But, A LOT of hard work went into getting where I am. My moto for this semester has been “Pain is temporary, GPA and legacy are forever.” I have learned that if you believe in something and are willing to put in the work anything is possible. So anyone out there, especially big girls don’t let anyone tell you you are less than perfect and that you cannot succeed! Get a good network, put on some confidence, throw your shoulders back, and charge ahead! There is greatness out there. I promise.

Boarding School Reunion, Where You Meet Your Bridesmaids

Boarding School Reunion, Where You Meet Your Bridesmaids

So last weekend I went home to ‘ol Virginia to a place that I love and hate at the same time. My old boarding school. People have lots of misconceptions about boarding school, yes we had the troubled girls who had been through numerous other schools. Yes, we had the rich legacies who were there because mommy had loved it. But, we also had the greatest girls there! Boarding school was hard, that age is such a hard time for any girl but I was also going through  a lot with my family.

When I arrived all the “old” girls and alumnae kept telling me that boarding school is where you meet you best friends and bridesmaids. The singular best thing about boarding school was these incredible women that I met and the network I have because of it. The education, ehh, the dining hall food, ehhh. The friendships and the women I know today, amazing.

The last time I saw some of these women was 4 years ago at the Next Miss Broadway’s mothers funeral. Be it plane, train, or automobile we all came back to our stomping ground to be there to support one another. From then till now I haven’t had a conversation with them, but our bond runs deep. We all picked up right where we had left off. 484320_10150908056029678_1311209515_n

This quote from pinterest couldn’t be more true.  https://www.pinterest.com/montanaskyyyy/  here is the link to my pinterest page if you want to check it out.

Friends like that are the women that we need to surround ourselves with, not ones that push us down so they feel higher up, but the women the rejoice in our success and read my blog after all these years! Yes, I found out at the reunion most of the women have been reading my blog so THANK YOU GUYS SO MUCH <3.

Here are so pictures of my amazing HS friends. If you don’t have women like this in your life go find some and stop accepting women in your life who criticize, make a friendship a chore, or don’t rejoice in your happiness. At this stage in life we are all crazy busy so let each other do their thing, but enjoy every second that you can when you come back together.

College Arts & Crafts Cause Procrastination

College Arts & Crafts Cause Procrastination

So as I write this blog post I should really be doing anything else, especially my huge research paper for my research and methods class. But, I am on Facebook and thinking about ideas for letters. I love to procrastinate with arts & crafts and once I get started I won’t stop. So here are some of my favorite and crafty ways to waste time but have some awesome things for your dorm/apartment/house!

Paddles- I seriously love making these! I love it so much that I make them months in advance of events and hang them on Prince Charming and Guapo’s wall till it’s time to deliver them. I also make them for other people, because that is a good way to waste even more time when in run out of my own things to make.

My Paddles

My Grammy made this grapevine wreath when she was first married to my Grandfather, so it must be almost 60 years old. They sell similar ones at Walmart, but this one is special to me. I found it in her old shed and ever since I have had it on my door at school to decorate for the season. I spend a max of $3 dollars on decorations for each “theme.” I normally only get a single dollar store item, so on average I spend $10  a year on something that cheers up my apartment and makes me so happy. Well Worth It 🙂 Also, Prince Charming and I have a lot of fun picking out the decorations.

When I can’t even procrastinate at home anymore I take myself to the fabric stores and debate for hours over the best color combos for letters. I have found the BEST Alum who makes super reasonable letters. She has started her own letter making business, so if you want her contact info just comment below. Here are a few of my favorite new letters.

How To Spring Break in Historic Savannah

How To Spring Break in Historic Savannah

So, two weeks ago Price Charming and I visited one of my most favorite places! Savannah, GA!! I talk about it a lot, I know, but if you have been there you understand why. If you haven’t been there you should defiantly put it on your bucket list. We started our Georgia trip with a few days of R &R with my Grammy, then drove from Farm County to the beautiful, historic, river city of Savannah.

Our Hotel On The Water

We knew we were going to have a great trip because I had my heart set on staying at the Westin Savannah Harbor Resort & Spa but being St. Paddy’s day everything was super expensive. Prince Charming is a thrill seeker, so we did one of those blind buys on Priceline. It gave us a price and a 4-Star rating or above, we entered our card and waited for the email letting us know where we were going to stay… and guess what?! We got the Westin and I will definitely try it again! My favorite thing about staying there was riding the water ferry every morning to and from the historic down town. What a fun way to commute.

I am a huge fan of reading all the signs and learning about the history of places. If I could have one super power it would be time travel. I love the old features of the city, dating from 1700’s – 1960’s. My favorite part of the trip was the historic tour on the hop on hop off bus. We got to hear all the history and then get out and explore.

I love the architecture and that the homes are set up along 22 green squares, it makes for the most breathtaking front yards and community spaces. While we were there, we saw a couple getting married in a square. What a great use of public lands! Most of the homes are from the 1800’s. Check out this bubbly glass, they don’t make it like that anymore.

We also visited the Mercer-Williams House. This home to me was so cool because I read Midnight in the Garden of Good & Evil, which surrounded the events of Jim Williams, one of Savannah’s elite shooting his young lover in his home one night and the later trial. If books aren’t your thing take a trip to Savannah via the movie staring Kevin Spacey & John Cusack directed by Clint Eastwood.

We made our way home with some hot krispy kremes and wonderful memories. Where is one of your favorite cities?

A Spring Clothes Shopping Adventure for a Plus Sized Girl

So I like most women I love and hate spring. I love the warm weather, pretty flowers blooming, and the excitement in the air on a college campus! I do not like turning in my leggings and baggy shirts for cute summer shorts and blouses… especially after hibernating all winter. Also I blame Prince Charming, he made me feel loved and comfortable and like I should eat all those cookies in bed watching tv this winter…. Blahhhhh. (Prince Charming helped eat those cookies and he also needed new clothes as well so check out my style guide for men!)

So as we headed to the sunny south I packed my favorite summer clothes and they were all a wee bit tight. So I did what sensible person would do I took my Grammy up on the offer to go to the mall! For years I have been saying that I want to be the girl in the sundresses, think Jane the Virgin she always looks so cute and classic in her bright colored sundresses!

So my first stop was Old Navy- cheap and fun the perfect dresses to wear to class, not worry about getting them stained, and lots of bang for my buck. I tried a LOT of dresses on and loved a LOT of them! Below are some of the dresses I got, I tried to pick a good variety some strappy for grabbing a drink with friends and then some more professional for work and student government meetings. While there I also grabbed some light tanks and light weight cotton/linen pants.

Please, find a store that has clothes that fit you and gives you that “damn these look good” feeling! For me that’s Lane Bryant for pants shopping. This is where I splurge and recommend spending the money anything I have bought from there holds up and will be good season after season. I have a terrible time finding pants or shorts that fit and feel comfortable. I tried on lots of pants and shorts but I mixed and matched till I walked out with a huge smile on my face! The FIT MATTERS! Make sure to try a couple sizes and fits to find the right ones. I tried the Lena in an 18 and a Sophie in a 20. The Lena is a curvier fit, while the Sophie is a slimmer fit. For me I liked the Sophie’s in a 20 rather than taking the smaller size number. Lane Bryant is great about giving out coupons when you spend money, so I have $50 off my next $100 purchase, a pretty good deal!

The biggest lesson I learned this trip:

  1. DO NOT worry about what size the garment says it is, the fit is much much much more important than a number!
  2. DO buy cotton/ linen materials when you can. These will be lightweight and comfy. Polyester means you will literally wrap yourself in plastic and be hot!
  3. Wear comfy shoes to shop around in, consider it a hunting expedition not a time to show off.
  4. Take good friends with you to make the day fun. Price Charming sat in the changing room with me giving me his honest opinion and hanging everything back up after I had tried it on and didn’t  want it.
  5. Throw some shorts on underneath a dress if you’re going to do lots of walking to keep you comfy and chub rub free! My favorite are at Wal-Mart for $9 they are slip shorts so they are a little slick so my dress doesn’t stick to them like cotton spandex shorts and ride up.

Where are some of your favorite places to shop and tips & tricks?

My Favorite Spring Break Must Haves!

My Favorite Spring Break Must Haves!

I am finally feeling better! I bit the bullet and went to the doctor. I finally feel back to my normal self; this was a hard cold and flu season. While being sick I had lots of time to think and I realized all the things I love! So here is a list of things I love and that made it on my Spring Break Packing list!

For Spring Break Prince Charming and I are going to Savannah, GA check back next week for a recap of the trip!

Mani/Pedis– OPI My Favorite Ornament by Mariah Carey. This is seriously my favorite it is great Christmas to 4th of July to birthday bashes. Sparkles are so fun these appear gold or silver depending on what you pair with them! The only downside is that it’s from 2013 so somewhat hard to find at the salon now. I cannot start a trip without a mani/pedi I don’t feel on point , relaxed, or sandal ready.

iPhone 6s Plus- I LOVE my big phone! How was I ever able to function before the big screen! It is great for NETFLIX binges when I am stuck waiting somewhere, taking photos on vacation, and even maintaining some schoolwork in a pinch! Get it once you try it you will love it.

Adult Coloring Books- I was reading somewhere that adult coloring books bring us closest to meditation than anything else out there for non Yogi people like myself (I am trying though, I loved Yoga last week). I find it so relaxing please go get one! It melts the stress away, just make sure to get enough colored pencils 24 count or more!

Fit Bit- So I got added into the Work Week Hustle challenge and I don’t win it but it is a super fun way tap into my competitive side and try and beat some people! Depending on my motivation level and competitiveness, sometimes I am out walking at 10 pm trying to get steps.(I have the charge, whatever you do make sure you have the screen on your fitbit).

Price Charming- is such a rock in my life and I don’t tell y’all about him enough! He is my best friend, confidant, and sometimes my butler. He is great about taking care of me, he cooks most of the meals, helps with the weekly laundry and cleaning duties, and puts up with my sometimes demanding bitchy side. We laugh and tell secrets, he always has my back and supports me rather right or wrong he is there. He is the one I want to experience everything with, I want to explore with him because I may hate him but always love him and have fun!

I Got a Girl Crush on that CONFIDENCE!

So, unless you have been living under a rock we have all heard that Sports Illustrated has a new cover model this year, and she is plus sized! Ashley Graham is an up and coming household name. So once I saw her cover all over my Facebook I took sometime to basically stalk her, yes I looked at every post on her Intagram, and I fell in love! That is the BODY I WANT! Graham is a size 16, so that’s not that far for me to go, it’s not like I’m trying to be a size 6! I would never want to be any smaller.

I love my body and I love my body how I am right now! I think it’s all about how you feel, and Graham obviously feels great about her body! I have to say this might be bad but I feel great with mine, all size 20 of it. After all this homework today I am probably going to drag my ass to a fast food restaurant and order some sweet tea and fries. So I guess I actually don’t want her body and I’ll just keep rocking mine.

But, I think what is important for women of all sizes is to rock what they got! I showed several guy friends of mine Ashley Graham and some of the other SI Models. They all said the Graham was the HOTTEST! That is great news big girls! Guys think you’re hot if you are confidant, charismatic, and fun! Guapo said it’s just a matter of confidence. So I encourage you all to do what makes you feel more confidant. But, beauty is so much more than the size of your pants or the number on the scale. Beauty is knowing you are a great person, fun, charismatic, a type of friend that can be called anytime of day or night, loyal, and loving to those who matter. I know all these things about myself and I think I am pretty right now. So I’m channeling my confidence and I’m gonna be one hot plus sized girl out in this world!

So I am still going to take my sexy confident self to go get those fries and sweet tea, but I am also going to set some goals.

  • Encourage myself everyday with positive self-talk.
  • Surround myself with people who love me and lift me up.
  • Go to the gym 3 times a week
  • TRY YOGA!! I am going to a yoga class on Tuesday!! Ill let ya know how it goes.
  • Reach my step goal every week!
  • Rock what I got and light up any room!

Let me know if you have any great at home workouts, yoga routines, confidence boosters, or if you want a positive encouragement buddy… cause I am here and YOU are amazing!
